Book Review: Once Burned by Jeaniene Frost

Goodreads Summary: She's a mortal with dark powers...

After a tragic accident scarred her body and destroyed her dreams, Leila never imagined that the worst was still to come: terrifying powers that let her channel electricity and learn a person's darkest secrets through a single touch. Leila is doomed to a life of solitude...until creatures of the night kidnap her, forcing her to reach out with a telepathic distress call to the world's most infamous vampire...

He's the Prince of Night...

Vlad Tepesh inspired the greatest vampire legend of all—but whatever you do, don't call him Dracula. Vlad's ability to control fire makes him one of the most feared vampires in existence, but his enemies have found a new weapon against him—a beautiful mortal with powers to match his own. When Vlad and Leila meet, however, passion ignites between them, threatening to consume them both. It will take everything that they are to stop an enemy intent on bringing them down in flames

Urban fantasy and PNRs are my go to genres. I'm mostly in Y.A. but I enjoyed reading this book. Leila suffered from a tragic accident that made her turn away from her dreams and gain some electric/psychic  powers. She uses her powers to gain insight to a person's darkest secrets or memories through a single touch by touching something of value to the person. Once she gets kidnapped she is forced to make a telepathic connection to the most feared Vampire.

I started out reading this by listening to the audio book then a little past half way through the story I picked up the physical copy. This does have the usually trope of Urban Fantasys and Urban PNRs but like I said this is the type of genre that I love. Leila is strong character. She is human but because of her powers she feels like it has taken over life and caused her to live in solitude and away from the people she loves. She puts those she loves in before her and will stand up to anyone that gets in her way.

Vlad is the Prince of Night and the most feared Vampire. He is known for his ruthlessness. He has a dark past that is shown in some parts through the story. He and Leila are somewhat of a perfect match. He is upfront about the expectations and the things that he can give on an emotional level but does not want Leila to expect more.

The plot fell for me a little bit. I think I was expecting a bit more. There were times I felt like the majority of the story was drawn out and the action was rushed especially towards the end. But I do understand that this is part of a series so that might be just how book one is set up.

I know I'm way late with reading this series but I did enjoy it and I'm ready to move on to book two.

The Mister Book Review

Goodreads synopsis:  London, 2019. Life has been easy for Maxim Trevelyan. With his good looks, aristocratic connections, and money, he’s never had to work and he’s rarely slept alone. But all that changes when tragedy strikes and Maxim inherits his family’s noble title, wealth, and estates, and all the responsibility that entails. It’s a role he’s not prepared for and one that he struggles to face.   But his biggest challenge is fighting his desire for an unexpected, enigmatic young woman who’s recently arrived in England, possessing little more than a dangerous and troublesome past.  Reticent, beautiful, and musically gifted, she’s an alluring mystery, and Maxim’s longing for her deepens into a passion that he’s never experienced and dares not name. Just who is Alessia Demachi? Can Maxim protect her from the malevolence that threatens her? And what will she do when she learns that he’s been hiding secrets of his own?   I will admit I did have some kind of salty feelings going int
